Week 4 Textbook

2. My first day in my new school was full of surprises. Classes were extroadinary and the teachers and students were very creative. Moreover, I met my old elementary school.

3. A road trip is the best way to see the United States. Even it takes more time, you’ll be able to meet good people and see great scenery on the way. Feet might hurt and skin might burn, but your eyes will be pleased.

Week 4 : Research Topic

The topic I want to talk about is freedom of speech. What I have learnt from my previous academic studies at the University is that freedom of speech is a basic and fundamental human right. However, it seems to be violated nowadays and I have seen people across the nation infringing it whether unconsciously or consciously. I believe it can look very controversial because a lot of cases related to this topic collides with personal privacy and national security.

‘What comes first, freedom of speech or personal privacy?’ is my first research question. From what I understand, this topic has always been the number 1 entrée on issues relating to freedom of speech. I believe that there are no other doubts that this is the most important question since both two factors are based on our constitutional law. Since I’m currently a journalism major at HUFS, I would like to go in-depth searching for what is right and what is misunderstood. (In social science, it is very dangerous to identify something as ‘wrong’ unless it is absolutely true).

‘Can false statements be justified on the grounds of freedom of speech?’ comes next as my research question. It might seem odd to see a research to find out whether false can be ok, but actually it is one of the most important questions. By looking into in-depth understandings about false statements and their inevitable nature in journalism fields, false statements can be understood in a variety of perspectives rather than being simply judged as wrong.

Like I have said above, my current interest is in Journalism area. I believe that understanding journalism and the press is very important in our daily lives because the media usually frames our behaviors. According to research on Korean people’s daily media usage, it shows that the Korean people normally uses the media from 4 to 6 hours every day. (TV 3 hours and internet 2 hours). However, not many people are aware of the importance of freedom of speech. This simple and complex idea can substantially affect our knowledge boundry. My research will be able to provide people to know what is right and what comes first during our media consumption.

Week 1 Routine

I usually start my day with my tablet telling me what time it is. My morning starts at 6:30 am and I start reading news on my portable device until 7 am. During the weekdays I normally prepare to go to school. Since it is a long trip from my house to HUFS, I have to take the subway. I usually read books or listen to music through my tablet while moving. However, on the weekends I usually take my phone and ride my bike. I would mount it into my bicycle phone deck, and it serves perfectly as a GPS machine.

Between classes, I usually practice Table Tennis in the campus. While practicing, I sometimes takeout my phone and start video recording of my training sessions to analyze myself. It really helps me alot. If I have some time during the semester, I try to take as many online courses as possible. Last semester I achieved a basic Business Entrepreneur course certificate from Maryland University. I believe that online lectures are great since I don’t actually have to be in the classroom for that course. During breaks, I would listen to music with my cell phone, or watch a movie through my laptop. In the evenings or after supper, I play games with my brother to choose who gets to do the dishes.

I am a huge tech fan. Since I’m interested in Computer Science, my biggest interest is new technology. I have all my devices connected. From simple exercise apps to office works, they are all connected and synchronized whenever I try to use them. Moreover, when the time is available, I try to write some codes as well. Therefore, I cannot imagine a single day without technology. Something that is analog is good, but not enough for me. I believe that the technology truly frees me from all the problems.
